Persaud, Noel’s Pan Am journey ends tamely in the pool

Team Guyana’s swimmers sojourn in the pool at the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile, came to a tame end yesterday with young Olympian Aleka Persaud not making it out of her Women’s 50m Freestyle heat while Raekwon Noel was disqualified in his Men’s 400m Individual Medley heat.

Persaud took to the pool for the final time and could only muster 27.81 seconds, well short of her personal best (26.42 seconds) in that event, finishing joint seventh with Paraguay’s Maria Arrua.

The heat was won by Chile’s Inez Marin (26.57 seconds). Despite not making it past any of the heats she competed in, Persaud turned in a national record-breaking performance in the 100m Women’s Butterfly heat. She turned in a time of 1:05.75s to lower her record from 1.06.93s, despite that performance she had only managed 25th overall in the event.

Meanwhile Noel took part in heat 1 of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley and was disqualified. That brought an end to his participation in the Pan Am Games.

Team Guyana will next head into action in the discipline of table tennis this weekend with Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill taking to the arena.

The two will compete in singles and the mixed doubles events.
