Bulletin to be issued over Granny Landing killing – police

The suspect in the chopping last month at Granny Landing, Omai Backdam, Siparuni, Region Eight, that resulted in the death of a miner, Perry Budhram, is yet to be arrested, says Regional Commander Senior Superintendent Khalid Mandal.

However, Mandal yesterday informed that a wanted bulletin is expected to be issued for the suspect soon.

Budhram, of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, was chopped on his arms allegedly after making remarks about another miner’s mother and died following the incident.

According to a police release, Budhram and two co-workers from Chunilall Babulall Mining Company – McDavid Barran, 30, and Navin Murray, 23 – went to Granny Landing on Saturday, October 14 at about 12.00 hours, where they purchased a case of beer and began to imbibe.

At about 15.00 hours, Budhram told his co-workers that he was going to “pick a fare”. An hour later, the two co-workers decided to head back to camp and called for Budhram, who reportedly told them that he was not returning.

An eyewitness, Lincoln Samson, a 57-year-old businessman of Granny Landing, recalled that around 17.45 hours the next day, October 15, he saw Budhram run behind his shop in a bent over position. He immediately investigated and saw that he had wounds on each of his arms.

Samson said Budhram told him that a man had chopped him. Samson then assisted him by tying the wounds with cloth. He told the police that he later saw ‘Saw Man’ and asked him if he knew who had chopped Budhram. He said ‘Saw Man’ responded that Budhram had also chopped him and told him about his mother. Budhram, meanwhile, who had been placed to lie down near a truck, had become motionless prompting Samson to contact the police.

Budhram was taken to Mahdia District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police stated that they searched several shops, camps, and worksites for the suspect, ‘Saw Man’, but he could not be found.

The investigation is ongoing.
