Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn yesterday visited Constable Kyvon James at his residence following the incident on December 21 where a speeding car crashed into him while he was attending to an accident scene at the Parliament Building.

A release from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Benn offered words of encouragement to Constable James, who sustained fractures to both legs while performing duties.

Benn highlighted the essential role that frontline service providers, like Constable James, play in ensuring public safety.

“Our dedicated Servicemen, committed to service and protection, should not be subjected to such risks while on duty,” Benn stated in the release.

The accident between 3 am and 3.30 am involved police constable James, 25, of Hashim Street, Corriverton, Berbice; a motor car, PAB 3071, driven by Osafo Cranmore, 42, of Lot 157 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown; a truck, GLL 3695, owned and driven by Chandica Balram, 64, of Lot 35 Robb Street, Bourda, Georgetown;  a motor car, PAF 4021, owned and driven by Sabrina Bhajan, 32, of  86 Farm Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara; and a tow truck, GAF 1396, owned and driven by Harinarine Satnarine , 48, of Lot 1B Shell Road, Kitty, Georgetown.

Investigations revealed that Bhajan’s car was proceeding west along Brickdam at a fast rate. She failed to stop at the intersection of the Avenue of the Republic and drove into the path of Balram’s truck which was heading south on the Avenue of the Republic. As a result, Balram lost control of his truck and drove into a section of the wrought iron fence, causing significant damage. Bhajan sustained injuries and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in a conscious state.

Shortly after the accident, Constable James was at the scene investigating what had happened  and he was being assisted by Harinarine who was using his tow truck to remove Bhajan’s car. At the time, Constable James was standing at the intersection decked out in his uniform, reflector vest and lighted wand while the tow truck was parked facing west on Brickdam. While the constable was in his position, PAB 3071, driven by Cranmore, was proceeding west along Brickdam at a fast rate. When the car arrived at the intersection, the driver failed to stop and collided first with Constable James before hitting Harinarine.

The impact of the collision resulted in both men being thrown several feet away. They both were picked up in a conscious condition by emergency medical technicians who were summoned to the scene and rushed to the GPH, where they were both examined.
