The victorious Panthers celebrate with their spoils after beating the Police Falcons 19-12 in the final of the John Lewis Memorial 7s Rugby Tournament.

After finishing in the top two spots following the round-robin stage, the Panthers and Police teams contested a highly entertaining final in the 2nd edition of the John Lewis Memorial 7s Rugby Tournament, with the Panthers getting the better of the defending champions at the Rugby Field in the National Park yesterday.

While the police side started the final strongly, the Panthers settled into their game and scored three tries with two goal conversions to end up 19-12 winners.

Ryan Dey, Jamal Angus, and Makayah Smith all scored tries for the winners, while Lionel Holder and Scott Garraway had successful tries for the runners-up.

Preceding the final was the third-place battle between the GDF and the Hornets, with the army prevailing 17-7 to take third place.

The inaugural edition of the tournament was played last year, with the Police Falcons emerging victorious.

The tournament was named in honour of the late Colonel John Lewis, a former President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), who died in April 2020 following a period of illness.

Lewis was best remembered for his role as an administrator within the game and for his selflessness in supporting rugby in Guyana.
