Former standout boxer, Junior Christie, yesterday gave a timely shot in the arm in the form of gear to the four Cuba bound pugilists.

Christie, who represented Guyana at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California, USA, handed over gloves, bandages, trunks and jump ropes to the four 2020 Tokyo Olympic hopefuls who depart Guyana on Saturday for a three-month training stint to the Spanish speaking island.

The quartet, Keevin Allicock, Colin Lewis, Desmond Amsterdam and Dennis Thomas will be in Cuba preparing for the Olympic Qualifiers in late March.

They will be looking to emulate Christie’s feat of clinching a berth at the upcoming Olympic Games.

Christie, who fought some of the nation’s best in the 80s, noted that he always looks to support young boxers because he knows of the struggles that local athletes endure trying to be successful in sports.
