Five held over chilling Republic Park home invasion

Police have arrested five persons in connection with last Friday’s home invasion at Republic Park, East Bank Demerara (EBD) during which a businessman and his family were robbed of over $1 million in cash and gold jewellery.

This was confirmed by Regional Commander Kurleigh Simon, who when contacted for an update on the matter yesterday told Stabroek News that the investigation is ongoing.

Simon said the suspects were arrested on separate occasions following the incident. They remained in custody up to yesterday morning.

Stabroek News had reported that the attack was carried out around 8 am by four masked men, two of whom were armed with handguns.

At the time, the businessman, who has been identified as Ryan Rajmangal, and his four children were at home.

The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera inside the home.

Rajmangal’s wife reportedly sensed something was amiss after several calls to his phone went unanswered. As a result, she checked on the home security cameras which were connected to her cellular phone when she saw the robbery taking place.

The woman immediately contacted a relative and the police.

The police in a press release had said that the bandits pounced on the businessman as he was about to leave his home to transact business.

“The victim (Rajmangal) was about to leave his home to transact some business and whilst walking through his front door, he was pounced on by the perpetrators who pointed a gun at him,” the police explained.

This newspaper learnt that the bandits, one of whom was dressed as a utility worker, reportedly scaled Rajmangal’s fence before gaining entry into the house.

The businessman was then forced back into his house. The police further explained that the bandits bound the businessman’s hands and feet after which they demanded that he hand over all the cash and jewellery. He complied.

“The perpetrators then proceeded to ransack the house and subsequently made good their escape,” the police had said.

Two of the bandits fled on foot while the others escaped in a waiting car. No injury was reported but the home invasion would have clearly left the children traumatized. .
