The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), at the weekend, began the distribution of cricket gear donated by former West Indies cricketer, Clayton Lambert.

“A total of 72 youth cricketers, drawn from 19 clubs with junior teams, received donations of cricket gear including uniforms, from the BCB under the Clayton Lambert Gear Project,” a release from the board stated.

“The project saw a $1.5M investment from the former West Indies opener and his friends and several other organisations benefited with donations of gear as well.”

BCB President Hilbert Foster advised the youths to cherish the equipment and to make sure that they care for them.

He told them that the gear belonged to them personally and not the clubs as the BCB and Mr. Lambert was investing into their future,” the release noted.

The distribution process captured an inspiring story where youngster Restesh Haimchand of No. 72 Village, whose father recently lost both of his arms in a recent accident, received a new bat as promised by Foster.  Foster, according to the BCB release, made a promise to the Haimchand family to kick-start the youngster’s career by making a donation after learning about the incident.

The board at the weekend also launched its 2021 list of activities by handing over $220,000 worth of face masks, face shields, and hand sanitisers to over 20 junior cricket clubs drawn from across the county at the Area H Ground.

Each club received 200 face masks, 15 face shields and two large bottles of hand sanitisers for the upcoming Under 15 tournament set to bowl off later in the month.

The donations were sponsored by Prime Minister, Brigadier (rt’d), Mark Phillips and former Inter-County player, Ishwar Singh.
