Guyanese company Atlantic Ventures Incorporated (AVI) has partnered with an Indian investment and development company to launch a US$35 million undertaking which will see the opening of “the Caribbean’s first Marine and Off-Shore Training Institute”.

Waddell sent on leave until end of contract

As the details of the contract signed by her daughter-in-law for a diplomatic posting in Canada went public, former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Audrey Waddell was yesterday sent on immediate leave until her contract expires in May.

According to a release from the Indian High Commission, the President of India conveyed his good wishes to the new envoy on his appointment and thanked the Government of Guyana for supporting India’s candidature for the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council for the term 2021-22.

Caribbean exploring technology to mitigate climate change challenges

With threats to food security in the Caribbean looming large on account of the increasing impact of climate change on the region’s agricultural sector, and more recently, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member countries in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) through its “Cooperation for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean” initiative are embarking on a drive to help the region adapt to climate change through the application of digital technologies.

Caribbean long-term post-COVID recovery still ‘up in the air’: World Bank President

As international organisations continue to increase their focus on the prognosis for both the speed and extent of Caribbean economies’ recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Bank was last week projecting that while there is likely to occur a ‘degree of recovery” in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries this year, the ongoing impact of the pandemic notwithstanding, it was unlikely that the extent of that recovery would be sufficient to compensate for the ravages of 2020.

Much to do after the re-opening of schools

Dear Editor, A few days ago marked one year for a number of important events in Guyana as follows:  (a) The World Health Organisation declaring COVID-19 a pandemic, (b) Guyana recording its first case of COVID-19, (c) Schools were declared closed due to COVID-19, (d) the institution of varying restrictions to curb COVID-19, and (e) the commencement of online classes for schools.

CCJ might remain stagnant for a long time

Dear Editor, The two largest English speaking countries in the Caribbean Community seem to have backtracked from their original position two decades ago and so far have not abolished appeals to the Privy Council and join the appellate division of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago were in the forefront, pegging away for the regional court, and now more than 16 years after the inauguration they have not yet done so.
