GOA select 15 for South American Youth games

The delegation of officials and athletes for the South American Youth Games were unveiled to the media yesterday at Olympic House. Fifteen athletes will represent Guyana in five disciplines at the Games which will take place from Argentina from April 28 to May 8.
The delegation of officials and athletes for the South American Youth Games were unveiled to the media yesterday at Olympic House. Fifteen athletes will represent Guyana in five disciplines at the Games which will take place from Argentina from April 28 to May 8.

Fifteen athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 will represent Guyana in five disciplines at the third South American Youth Games which will take place in Argentina from April 28 to May 8.

These and other details were disclosed yesterday during a press briefing at Olympic House where the delegation of officials and athletes were unveiled to the media.

Team Guyana, will be represented in the disciplines of basketball (3×3), badminton, boxing, swimming and table tennis.

The respective contingents are as follows:

Boxing: Travis Inverary 

Coach: Sebert Blake 

Basketball 

Anthony Kimol, Carmelo Man-Son-Hing, Arrindell Matthias and Troavis Lewis. 

Coach: Junior Hercules

Badminton 

Matthew Beharry 

Coach: Jonathan Mangra

Swimming: Leon Seaton, Vladimir Woodroffe, Patrice Mahaica, Ariel Rodrigues and Zara Cane. 

Coach: Paul Mahaica

Table Tennis: Jasmine Billingy, Thuraia Thomas, Jonathan Van Lange, Krystian Sahadeo

Coach: Idi Lewis

The Chef de Mission is Nalini McKoy.

The games will host more than 2,500 athletes from 15 nations, who will compete in 26 disciplines.

GOA Vice President, Godfrey Munroe, stated that the association will be covering the major cost for the contingent of the developmental games.

“It is a great opportunity for young Olympic prospects to be engaged and we wish them all the success,” he added.

Treasurer of the GOA, Garfield Wiltshire, said that the championship affords young athletes a great opportunity to compete and be exposed to a high level of competition.

He added that he expects them to “put their best  foot forward,” and wished them best of luck during the meet. 

Wiltshire also thanked Eureka Labs for once again facilitating the PCR COVID-19 tests for a departing delegation.
