Elton Dharry used burst of activity to win a straightforward eight-round unanimous decision over Colombian journeyman, Ronald Ramos on Saturday night.

Dharry gave his performance at the tastefully decorated National Gymnasium a “six or seven” out of 10 and said he felt rusty after 13 months out of the ring.

“I felt a little rusty but I trained well for the fight. I am happy to be back in the ring and my career is back in track again.”

The ringside judges scored the headline fight of the ‘Return of the Scorpion’ Pro/Am card 80-73 and 79-73×2.

Despite the wide margin of victory, Dharry, 37, who improved to 27-6-1, admitted it was not his best performance, especially against Ramos, 46, who had lost six of his last seven fights.

“It was not my best performance, but that is boxing. I did what was necessary to win and he is a tough opponent.”

Dharry added “This performance was probably a six or seven, I could have moved better, attacked a lot better, but I had some minor neck and ankle issues but I do not want to make any excuses.”

Overall, the fight was marked with little burst of action, lots of misses and ill timed shots as both fighters stood nearly flat footed far from the centre of the ring. Still, Dharry controlled the overmatched southpaw from the start. The fight dragged on until the bell sounded to end the bantamweight bout following the eighth round. While Dharry showed some flashes of his old self, he will need to improve by leaps and bounds if he is to win his impending WBC Silver Belt title fight next month against Mexican, Hugo Hernandez.

Undercard…

While Dharry went the distance with Ramos, Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques stopped Luis Carillo in the fourth round of their super bantamweight encounter. ‘De Kid’ looked sharp and comfortable in the ring, dominating the Colombian from start to finish, punctuating with a left, right combination that dropped Carillo to the canvas. After a dazed Carillo looked disinterested in continuing, referee, Eon Jardine waved off the contest. The end came at 1:03 of the fourth.

While Barbadian Ricardo Blackman and Panama’s Natalya Delgado won unanimously against their respective opponents, Terrence Adams and Estafania Matute, Emanuel Anderson started his professional career with a first round stoppage.

The heavyweight Bajan making his pro debut got his punch for pay resume off to a brilliant start, stopping Anthony ‘Big 6’ Augustin at 1:35 in the first round after the latter’s corner threw in the towel following a knockdown and a subsequent barrage of unanswered head and body shots.

Amateur….

In the amateur segment of the well-attended event, Abiola Jackman won a unanimous decision over Trinidad’s Lee Ann Boodram while Alesha Jackman dropped a unanimous verdict against Jamaica’s Britney MacFarlane.

Gladston Winter and Keyon Britton unanimously defeated their opponents, Aleojounara Young and Curtis McDonald while  Kenroy Hamilton stopped Joel Hinds in the final round.

Abiola and Britton were then adjudged the male and female best boxers of the segment. The next boxing card locally is tentatively scheduled for July 15 at the Everest Cricket Club ground where Dharry is also scheduled to headline versus Hernandez. (Emmerson Campbell)
