St Ignatius of Region #9 sealed their maiden final appearance in the Digicel Schools Football Championship, defeating Region #1’s Waramuri 3-1 in their semi-final encounter on Wednesday at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground, Carifesta Avenue.

Following a scoreless first half, Romel Ernest handed St Ignatius the lead following a 52nd minute strike. Morgan Taruma then doubled their advantage, as he found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Waramuri managed to reduce the deficit in the 68th minute via a Danesh Williams conversion.

However, the victory was sealed seven minutes later, as Ernest completed his brace. St. Ignatius will now battle Carmel Secondary of Georgetown for the coveted title on Sunday at the same venue from 19:00hrs, after the Georgetown unit defeated DC Caesar Fox in the first semi-final fixture.

Waramuri will oppose DC Caesar Fox in the third-place playoff at 17:00hrs.

The championship match was initially programmed for the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara. The Petra Organization, the competition’s organizing committee, confirmed the change via an official press release, stating that the decision, which was taken in consultation with Digicel Guyana, manifested following an overwhelming appeal from several stakeholders inclusive of the respective fans.

According to the correspondence, “We wish to inform the general public, fans, players, teachers, and other stakeholders that due to overwhelming appeal/request from many stakeholders (media, coaches, managers, spectators, teachers, and players) a decision has been taken by the Petra Organization and Digicel Guyana to switched the finals of the Digicel Schools Football Championship 2023 from the Lenora Track and Field Center to the Ministry of Education Ground Carifesta Avenue Georgetown. All systems will be put in place to make the facility championship ready. We regret any inconvenience that this change may have caused and are happy to satisfy the many that would have expressed their concerns and reservations.”
