After a tumultuous 2020, a year in which he suffered his first professional defeat, Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen is hoping for a triumphant ring return.

“My goal is to get back to the top this year, that is my main focus,” the Brooklyn-based southpaw told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

He added that the elusive world title is still on his radar.

Allen was on the cusp of a world title shot when he ran into David Morrell last August, suffering his first loss via a unanimous decision. The two boxers had fought for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight title.

The 35-year-old Allen (22-1-1, 14 KOs) is again in discussion for a possible lucrative fight late next month or in early March.

“I told my manager that I slipped in the last fight, so I wanted a big fight right away. ESPN, they threw a name at me and I accepted,” he said.

Allen also disclosed that unofficially, he is scheduled to face Steven ‘So Cold’ Nelson on ESPN perhaps as early as next month or March.

“I haven’t gotten the contract yet, so nothing is set in stone. Until you get a contract then you know it is official”.

The undefeated Nelson (17-0, 14 KOs) who is trained by Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford’s trainer Brian “BoMac” McIntyre, fought his first 14 bouts as a light heavyweight before moving to super middleweight.

Nelson has won his last four fights via the TKO route.

Allen is unperturbed.

“I had a glimpse of him on ESPN and we fought on the same card in 2019. I have a decent idea of what he brings. When they threw the fight at me, I felt it was a winnable fight to put me back into being a title contender.”

The former WBA Gold Belt titleholder, said he opened camp two weeks ago at the Platinum Gloves Gym and will begin sparring at the end of January with the goal of getting back into world title contention.
