Fare increases unauthorised – ministries

The Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in a joint statement today said that they have noted that transportation providers for water, land transportation (minibuses and hire cars) and air operators to interior locations have imposed unilateral fare increases to customers.

CARICOM splits down the middle on UN vote to suspend Russia from rights council

Just a day after CARICOM Heads reaffirmed an obligation to co-ordinate foreign policy there was a deep division in the ranks at a crucial United Nations vote yesterday over suspending Russia from the Human Rights Council for gross excesses in Ukraine The resolution to suspend Russia alleged “gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” by its invading army in Ukraine and was carried by a vote of 93 in favour, 24 against and 58 abstentions.

AG hoping for change to formula for top judicial posts

While stating that he is in no way advocating for either the President or Opposition Leader regarding repeated failed attempts over the years by holders of both offices to agree on the substantive appointments of a Chancellor and Chief Justice, Attorney General Anil Nandlall SC says the formula requiring agreement by both has simply not worked.

Several persons including the director of the Ministry of Health’s Diamond, East Bank Demerara drugs bond, Cecil Jacques,  who were arrested by the police earlier this week in relation to the theft of supplies from the facility have been released from police custody.

Senate confirms Jackson as first Black woman on U.S. Supreme Court

WASHINGTON,  (Reuters) – Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate yesterday as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in a milestone for the United States and a victory for President Joe Biden, who made good on a campaign promise as he seeks to infuse the federal judiciary with a broader range of backgrounds.
