Stabroek Weekend

Pretty Petunias

Petunias originated in Argentina and the surrounding region. They get their name from a word the French borrowed – ‘petun’– meaning tobacco.

Tempe

Story and photos by Shabna Ullah   Rice was very much in evidence at Tempe, West Coast Berbice with some farmers drying paddy in their yards or on the roadways.

The Walter Rodney inquiry

The Walter Rodney Inquiry dominated the news last week. The evidence given and hopefully to be given by former and current activists of the WPA and the participation of the PNCR, suggest that the Inquiry will be provided with material, information and oral evidence, to enable it to arrive at a credible conclusion.

Nicknames

On a recent trip to Orlando I saw a comment by Sam Roberts, son of former Guyana Police Chief “Skip” Roberts, on the widespread Caribbean practice of pinning nicknames on people, especially males, and he noted the almost amiable nature of the practice in that, most of the time, nobody takes offence to the monikers even when they could be seen as disparaging.

Feeding elderly dogs

– the final ‘wrap–up’ column After more than 45 years of veterinary practice and participating in dozens of ‘refresher’ courses which share the latest knowledge in animal health matters, it has become clear to me that pet owners, over the years, still ask the same questions relative to the best nutritional regime for an elderly pet.

Rupununi Rattlesnake

This is a Rupununi Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus trigonicus) that was found last October while the World Wildlife Fund-Guianas and Global Wildlife Conservation were conducting a survey in Guyana’s south Rupununi savannah.

Marigolds

Flowers are loved for their beauty. There are simply beautiful shades of yellow, pink, salmon, blue, white, red, orange and purple blooming everywhere as the Easter season is upon us.
