The National Assembly last night unanimously endorsed a motion brought by Opposition Leader Robert Corbin to give due recognition to the work and contribution of Guyana’s first Executive President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.

Bills tabled for plea bargaining, wire tapping

Five bills to sharpen the crime fight and speed the dispensing of justice were tabled in Parliament yesterday covering plea bargaining, paper committals at preliminary inquiries, taking of audio visual evidence, wiretapping and requiring the logging of information on SIM-cards and mobile phone sales.

Telecoms liberalization involves difficult choices -ATN Chairman

Disagrees with DIGICEL’s Linehan on pace of discussions Atlantic Tele Network Chairman Cornelius Prior (jr) has told Stabroek Business that the pace of the current telecommunications liberalization talks between GT&T and the Government of Guyana is being dictated by the complexity of the issues under discussion and that he does not share the view expressed two weeks ago by former Chief Executive Officer of DIGICEL’s Guyana operations, Mark Linehan that the talks are moving “too slowly.”

Suriname came on Wednesday. Dominica arrived yesterday and with host Guyana already in training albeit for a short period, all is set for the commencement of the Digicel Caribbean Championship which had to be rescheduled for a couple of days due to the unavailability of flights for the Dominicans.

Argentine table tennis coach to begin five-day stint here

The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) will be hosting a five-day coaching programme beginning tomorrow which will be conducted by Argentinea National Coach and Coaching Instruc-tor of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Alejandra Gabaglio, according to a release from GTTA.

Study cites telecoms reliability as challenge to outsourcing growth

A recent study designed to fast track and implement plans for the development of the country’s Outsourcing Sector has concluded that “the cost and reliability of telecommunications in Guyana have impacted negatively on the development of the outsourcing industry”, The study which was completed in May by the international consultancy firm Accenture, also says that the growth and development of the sector will depend on “further government action” to address other problems including infrastructure, people, skills and the investment environment.

Television coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games in China will be provided locally by WRHM Channel Seven, which has obtained exclusive rights from the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) and American broadcaster, NBC to televise the games in Guyana.

$75.3M arms and ammo for army
