Massive illegal mining operation in New River shut down

A Joint Operation conducted by the Guyana Defence Force in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) earlier this week found a massive tunnel mining operation in the New River Basin some 50 miles east of Masakenari (Gunns Village), South Rupununi.

Guyana’s 2020 general elections: More theatre

It took a full five months after the Monday March 2 polling day for the eventual results of Guyana’s March 2 general elections to be declared in favour of the opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic, the intervening period having been punctuated by an unseemly controversy over the outcome of the poll characterised by equal measures of ludicrousness, legal resort, and the unprecedented high-profile intervention of sections of the  international community holding out for a declaration of a final result, after a CARICOM Observer Mission had overseen a recount of the votes and declared the incumbent David Granger-led coalition to have been voted out of office.

Gold Miners overrun Amazon indigenous lands as COVID-19 surges

By Jenny Gonzales Even as coastal communities in the hemisphere seek to sustain their pushback efforts against COVID-19, reports emanating from non-governmental organizations including the Socio-environmental Institute (ISA) and Greenpeace Brazil point to an aggressive ‘invasion’ of indigenous reserves and conservation units in the Amazon rainforest by well-financed miners, unmindful of either the impact of their gold recovery pursuits on the continued destruction of the rainforest or, more recently, that threat of the spread of the coronavirus among the indigenous Indians inhabiting the world’s largest expanse of rainforest.

Director of Social Services, Whentworth Tanner, during a recent interview with Stabroek News, disclosed that two wards at the Palms Geriatric Home are currently being renovated as part of efforts to have the facility as “elderly friendly” as possible and up to standard.

Dear Editor, One of the shortcomings with the appointments of non-traditional supporters of the PPP is their lack of authority to make decisions, allocate funds and recruit staff; in essence, these appointments incline towards being rubber stamps with perks, re: status, financial entitlements, duty-free concessions, VIP travel access and being invited to the glamour events hosted by the Government.
