Trinidad methanol plant under threat of closure

(Trinidad Guardian) On the day that the world’s largest methanol producer announced that it had agreed to a two-month extension of its natural gas contract with the National Gas Company, President and CEO of Methanex, John Floren made it clear that the Canadian giant is prepared to shut down its plant rather than sign a bad deal with the NGC.

Fighting a move to remove him as a candidate for the upcoming March 2nd general and regional elections on the basis of dual citizenship, Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) leader Lenox Shuman is maintaining that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) lacks both the legal authority and objectivity to decide on the issue, while contending that he officially renounced his Canadian citizenship since last December.

With international corruption watchdog Global Witness estimating a potential loss for Guyana of up to US$55 billion over the 40-year period of the licence for the offshore Stabroek Block, Change Guyana presidential candidate Robert Badal has said if he is elected to office he will set up a formal inquiry into the processes and negotiations surrounding oil and gas contracts.

Delayed justice

It is perhaps surprising why it hasn’t happened before. Former murder accused Cloyd Harris recently filed a $100 million lawsuit against the state for loss of liberty after spending six years on remand without trial.

Dear Editor, According to Professor Palmer in his academic paper “Elections and Political Development, The South Asian Experience” (Oxford University Press, 1975), elections are considered as a bridge between the voters and the political elites, between the polity and the society…” While the main vehicle for their message is by way of the platform, TV programmes and social media, the serious political parties leave a longer-term planning document with the voters called a “manifesto” (action plan).
